About essential oils and how to use them
|
|
|
Essential oils are the
extracts from plants, flowers, roots, seeds and leaves. They are
actually derived from the immune system of the plants. The ancient skill
in utilizing the extracts of these plants is known as
aromatherapy. The essential oils are blended with a carrier oil and massaged into the skin or breathed from the air. (Carrier oils are vegetable oils obtained from parts of the plant. Carrier oils do not evaporate or emit a scent like the essential oils. They work well together to blend into the skin or air.) By utilizing essential oils for psychological and physical health, we are practicing aromatherapy. The plants, flowers, seeds, etc. contain many healing properties, including antiseptics, antibiotics, anti-viral and anti-inflammatories which serve
as natural healing medicines. It is believed that they provide important healing elements for the mind and spirit as well as the body. These oils are also cleansing and refreshing for the mind, body and spirit. They
may revitalize us upon awakening, rejuvenate us during the day and help
us relax at the end of the day. It is believed that the oils are actually carried through various systems of the body such as the nervous, muscular, circulatory, endocrine and lymphatic. While breathing these essential oils, our sense of smell allows us to experience feelings of calmness and positive mental images, thus creating a positive feeling. The essential oils may be utilized in several different ways. You may inhale them through the air by adding a few drops of essential oils to steaming water. Breathing in the oils may help with congestion. An excellent oil to breathe in this manner is eucalyptus. You will notice that you are able to breathe easier and clear your head and nasal passages of pressure and congestion. However, do not put too many drops into the steam as it may cause your eyes to burn. Another method of using essential oils is to put a drop on your pulse points, such as on the wrist or neck to treat infection. You will also obtain the advantage of breathing the oil in this manner by creating a natural perfume. (It is a good idea to test the oil on a very small patch of skin first to make sure there is no allergic reaction such as a rash.) You may want to use essential oils on a compress by putting one to three drops on a warm wet towel, then applying it to the skin. When applied to the face, you may obtain a youthful glow. It can also provide First Aid in this manner. You may also use essential oils in your bath. The ritual of utilizing sweet-smelling oils in a bath has been around for centuries. It is a pleasurable and relaxing experience to bathe in the oils. You may want to light scented essential oil candles near your bath, or in another relaxing or romantic atmosphere. You may use a candle, then add a diffuser filled with essential oils. To utilize your favorite essential oil in massage, dilute it with a carrier oil then use it in your chosen form of massage to rub it into the skin. The scent will also permeate the air for a more relaxing atmosphere. Usually a few drops of the essential oil is enough for massage. Usually 10 drops of oil per 8oz bottle is adequate. |
